Storytelling is my passion. It has been since I was a child and I’m grateful this hasn’t faded with the years. My father was a lover of movies and I was the beneficiary of his library of VHS and Beta tapes. There were shelves upon shelves that he had curated from mom-and-pop movie rental stores gone under. There I stood with a little round face and bowl cut in awe of the worlds held up by those shelves. To this day I fall prey to being lost in a world for days after a good story comes to an end - be it on screen, on the stage, or in the pages of a book. These are the worlds I long to create. The ones that linger.
I owe much of my belief in community and my commitment to to social activism to my parents. They showed me a world rich in humanity and creativity from the very beginning. The respect I have for the indigenous peoples of this land has shaped the spiritual growth of my adult life. I cannot and will not claim a tradition that is not my own. I can however honestly say that the speeches, imagery, and stories I have encountered from the Elders of the Pacific Northwest region have deeply affected my life. I’m proud to call home a land with such rich heritage and natural abundance. I hope to be a steward of the planet and of my brothers and sisters in a way that honours those who have taught me. Environmental stewardship is at the forefront of my mind these days.
Growing up in the Pacific Northwest I had forests, farmlands, mountains, and ocean at my fingertips from the beginning. These beautiful landscapes nurtured in me a love and respect for the natural world that is integral to my work. Mountain climbing and working in the manufacturing business my parents created taught me work ethic and to push beyond the boundaries of what I see before me. Along with two brothers - I being the middle - my family traveled to countless farmers’ markets and festivals meeting the most interesting people and selling our rainbow funflowers (pinwheels). With my Mother at the wheel, we drove our short-bus packed to the gills with rainbow whirligigs to all sorts of wonderful events - the music of the Beatles blasting all the way.
My formal education is in theatre and philosophy. Two traditions that are deeply rooted in telling the stories of who we are in order to propel our imagination towards what we may become. Art in its many incarnations is, for me, the most effective way to engage questions of meaning. And this is why I have dedicated myself to the arts. To build community and to discover and dream together.
